How To... Plan a company holiday party

Make a list, check it twice when organizing holiday office party

Houston Business Journal - November 17, 2006

"If you have assigned seating, you could have a name card at each place," he says. Even though wearing a name tag may not seem very festive, Shahriari believes that people are actually more accepting about wearing name tags, particularly at a large corporation where some people may never have met.

Adding music and entertainment certainly adds some fun to the occasion, event planners say.

"Dancing is always popular and we're very fortunate in Houston with such an incredible talent pool of musicians to pick from," says Cordua's McCaskill.

With smaller groups or companies, a 'white elephant' gift exchange can work well, especially for a holiday party, and can provide some great laughs and memories, she says.

It's also wise to consider how to handle party guests who may have had too much to drink.

Steigerwald suggests discouraging overindulging by having the company pay for only the first two alcoholic beverages, and making additional drinks available on a cash basis.

The party hosts can act as spotters for those who might be enjoying a bit too much holiday cheer, before it becomes a problem, says Pappas' Kadlubar.

McCaskill suggests that anyone who has had too much to drink be quietly escorted home or offered a taxi ride.

"Do not address them in a group in front of others as that may escalate the situation," McCaskill says.

When planning a company holiday party:

• Plan ahead and book early;
• If possible, invite spouses. It adds to the festive mood and increases the likelihood of attendance;
• Consider including a theme for the party, as well as dancing, or a gift exchange;
• Designate someone to assume the role of host.
